Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Please help, burn cd

Good day to all,
I feel lika a kid in a candy store. I just discovered sugarmegs. I have been downloading like a maniac, Janis, Hot tuna, Panic, Jeff Airplane,[get my dead at other places] etc.
The GRINCH just came by. The files are too large to burn to a cd [80 min.]. What should I do?? I would gratefully appreciate help.
If I cannot make it work at sugermegs, is there another place I can make this work?

hey man, how are you. take fishhead's advice and split them up.

what panic shows did you grab? did you see them this summer at red rocks? what a fantastic 3 shows, AM Dew -- Mr. Soul encore. But nothing beats the Lawers, Guns and Money to end the tour in NC. The place went ape shit.

They are 1 giant file, wma I think. I can't figure out how to split them up.
I did't catch panic at the rocks but want to get those shows. I will be at phil in a few weeks, never seen phil and friends before, I think I am moderately excited.

u can buy them all on paniclive (nice to support a kind band) or stream them on that site i gave you. I don't know about BT. I bought the last five shows of the tour, so worth it.

if i am not too late to help.

it took some searching, but the wma files can be converted to wav and then the wave can be split into tracks.

i used Bee Think to convert and CD Wave Editor to split.

i am sure there are better programs, but that is what i found.

good luck, the sugarmegs site has so much good music

d1t1 = disc one track 1 d2t2 = disc2 track 2 etc......you must extract the files after downloading to burn a disc.

and watch out for trojan horses.....I was just uploading 3 files onto this messege and was hit by a trojan horse

SYF at LMA or LMA SYF

the three files were from 6/9/73 he's gone to playin

Thanks for the reply. The files have more minutes than 80. Windows media player says the file is too large to fit on one cd and will not burn. How do I separate the files to fit on a cd? I am over 40 and obviously not a computer whiz.
Thanks

Dear Rocks,
Yeah, I can't believe more people don't know about the Smegs streaming and (after 7 PM) DLing site. Peter probably has the largest music collection this side of the Smithsonian museum. Some helpful hints -

1. Even though many of the shows are compressed at around 40K bitrate, the quality varies widely even among the SBD shows. The age of the recording obviously makes a difference. But also, I find the singer/songwriter type shows usually sound much better overall, like - Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, CSNY acoustic, John Prine, and so on.
Some of these sound AMAZINGLY good for such crappy MP3's, especially cabled thru my big stereo speakers.

2. One option, if you use a dual DVD/CD player at your stereo, as many people have now, this means you can play a DVD full of MP3's on your stereo (like the VBR's here for instance). Simply convert the WMA files to MP3 using Db Power Amp (my favorite) or any other converter that will handle WMA file codecs. After you have about 10-12 shows converted, simply make folders for each (or not) and burn your DVD. Presto !! NO need to split the shows. They're seamless!! This is a DATA DVD or ISO, because your player will read the MP3's as data files.
One question is - if you convert WMA that are 40K bitrate - to a regular MP3, what bitrate do you convert to? I guess I would use the 256K setting, but 192 would probably save time and space. They were only 40K to start with so WTF??

3. Your other option is gonna take more time. You really need to get Nero CD burning software for this. Others will probably work, but Nero does it SO well. Basically -
After creating a new "burn new Audio CD" window browser, drag your WMA show file over into the CD window. Click once on the show file to highlight it. Now right click and select "Audio editor" or just click on the Edit button in the lower window. Either way, the WAV editor will now open up, and begin creating a WAV file you can edit. This may take a few minutes, so be patient.
Eventually, it will show you a long "sound wave". The spaces where there aren't any waves are the quiet parts between songs usually. Make your cuts there. Or - enter your cuts manually by exact minute using one of the pulldown options in WAV editor.
After you finish putting in your cuts (most 90 minute - 2 hour shows should only need one split) click "select all" under the Edit pulldown, then "save tracks as files" somewhere else on your computer. Then just burn each one onto a CD. Of course, you can split the songs into tracks as well - look at the HTML text files for each show's setlist, many give the song timings - but this is a lot of work.

Someday soon, there will be a DVD player that will play these WMA's with no converting. I have 3-4 DVD's full of those Smegs shows just waiting for the day!! And by the way, I can get between 70 and 80 shows on one DVD if I leave them as WMA files !!!
For now what I do, because I'm too lazy to convert all those shows - is just run a cable from my computer to my stereo room (about 30 ft.). Windows Media Player plays the shows, and I crank it up and EQ from the other room.

Again, I can't say enough about how really good many of these shows sound. Not like a pristine GD 1977 SBD, but certainly good enough to enjoy when you're in the right mood. Some of my favorites - Leon Russell, Randy Newman, Santana, Joni Mitchell, Ry Cooder, Jackson Browne, CSNY, Neil Young, Byrds, Bonnie Raitt - not to mention the COMPLETE Bob Dylan basement tapes (many CD's worth)!! And don't miss the unheard John Lennon interview from 1969 Bed Peace in Toronto. Did I mention the Little Feat shows?

The rarity and mind boggling variety of these shows outweighs the minor hassle of the inferior sound, IMHO.
cheers and good luck,
Dr. Flashback :-)

Right on about Nero; but I would look for a copy of the proven versions 5.5.xx or 6.6.xx on EBAY, unless he is using the new Vista OS on his computer. Lots of custom plugins for this software too (shn, flac and others) at www.afterdawn.com.

Got a DVD player built into my stereo TV. It plays both wav and mp-3 CDs. Gonna try some wma with it later since I still have some of those files hacked from Deadnet the other day. Those Rhinotards will never learn that we are always one step ahead of their headgames...

here's what I don't understand about Smegs. When I right click I do not get the option to download. Am I in the wrong place or where do I go. They have tons of shows I want but I have yet to figure out how to download them. Yes I am not the brightest bulb but....it shouldn't be this hard. Anyone have a link to the downloading area...maybe I am just in the wrong spot?

hey Ssag,
either use the DL manager in Mozilla Firefox (right click and click "save as" then select where to put in on your hard drive. or - I use Getright DL software. It's free and the greatest thing since sliced bread. Just right click on the show WMA file, then "copy link location". Then I paste the URL into the Getright DL window. Bingo! Also, I think you can just drag and drop into Getright. I highly recommend it. It's so easy, even girls can use it (just threw that in to see if Dancinbears is listening, LOL).
With my DSL, I can get a show in about 10 minutes usually.
cheers,
Dr. F

LOL Gina might not like that...lol

I have "downloadthemmall" as a download manager and I think that might be preventing me from doing that. Thats what I think is up anyhow. I have firefox also but when I right click I don't get the save as option because of my other download manager....ARGH.

I thank you for the help though man!!!!
